  • Expert Insight - Occupational road risk: Getting to grips with the challenges

Nobby spent 13 years in the Royal Air Force Police serving in Malta, Germany, Northern Ireland and stations throughout the UK. In 1987 he joined the Cheshire Police and after 2 years, joined the Traffic Department having trained both as a Police Advanced Motorcyclist and Police Advanced Car Driver. His duties included Traffic Enforcement, attending all classes of Road Crashes and incidents, Road safety in schools, colleges and companies. He also trained as a Firearms Officer and spent 8 years on the Firearms Support Unit. A life long interest in Road Safety and the prevention of deaths and serious injuries on the road took him to the role of Families Liaison Officer. These are the Police Officers who attend Fatal Road Traffic Collisions and have to tell the relatives of their loss and the circumstances of the incident. These officers can work up to 12 months with the family to the conclusion of their particular case.

In April 2008, having retired from the Cheshire Police, Nobby was lucky enough to join the Balfour Beatty Driver Risk Management project and to date now has in place a substantial Driver Management programme which includes, E learning, Road Safety presentations across the country both to Balfour Beatty and external companies, Driver Risk Index for drivers and a state of the art Driving Simulator based at Derby.
