Cardinus white paper teaches simple, effective safety leadership skills

Report will help health and safety practitioners to get ‘buy-in’

Influence is more important than authority, says Cardinus MD Jon Abbott

Successful health and safety leadership is about influence, not authority, according to a senior executive at Cardinus Risk Management.

Jon Abbott, managing director of ergonomics and safety at Cardinus, said he believes that managers responsible for health and safety can achieve much better results by using a few simple leadership skills to win the support of senior managers and buy-in from staff.

Introducing a new white paper from Cardinus called Effective Safety Leadership, Mr Abbott said, “While many safety practitioners are able to influence managers, there are few who are able to assert the same level of influence over senior executives. More than ever, safety needs to be integrated into every part of a business. Corporate strategies will rely on a number of disciplines and safety should be at the heart of these.”

The free white paper contains lots of advice for health and safety professionals who need to get their message heard and acted upon at board level. The report has been written by Barry Holt, the head of health and safety consultancy at Cardinus, who has over 30 years’ experience of health, safety and environmental consulting and Keith Scott, group head of safety at Royal Mail and chairman of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM), which endorses the white paper.
