British safety training company strikes it rich abroad

The Humber-based health and safety training provider SHE Knows has struck it rich abroad with new training contracts in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Singapore and Zambia.

The company, with offices in Grimsby and Hull, has recently completed training for construction workers in Oman, gold miners in Kyrgyzstan, and copper and lime miners in Zambia.

As well as these recent success in construction and mining, SHE Knows is active in other UK and international sectors of business and industry, including energy, marine and petrochemicals.

“We have been able to build up a good level of business with personal recommendations in our key business sectors,” says managing director Linda Crossland-Clarke. “We are targeting new markets in Finland, Peru, Singapore and South Africa.”

SHE Knows has turnover of close to £1m and employs 13 staff, and UK clients that include Conoco-Phillips and HETA as well as a large number of SMEs.

The company provides a suite of health and safety training services, including NVQ Level-3 to 5 in occupational health and safety, first aid, fire-fighting and confined space awareness, and safety passports for the petro-chemical industry.

“We are a one-stop shop for any business, large or small, looking for health and safety training and are fully experienced in all UK and international markets,“ added Mrs Crossland-Clarke, who founded the company in 2003 after returning to Hull from living in the Falkland Islands.

SHE Knows trainers can provide tuition either onsite or at the company’s fully serviced offices, but the international work usually requires foreign travel.

“A number of our trainers are ex-armed forces who are well versed in putting up with what can be sometimes very trying conditions,” added Mrs Crossland-Clarke.

The contract in Oman, where SHE Knows has had an office since 2008, is for the PDO oil refinery, which is working in conjunction with Shell. A 10-day NEBOSH course in Muscat at the end of October is to provide a platform for safety practitioners to develop them-selves and up-skill their health and safety training so they can undertake the NVQ Level 5 diploma and become members of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

In Zambia, the company has secured ongoing work with the Canadian company First Quantum Minerals, which have copper and lime mines across the country. This includes two-week CIEH Level 3 and NVQ Level 5 health and safety courses for mine workers.

“We provide First Quantum with risk assessment and fire fighting courses, and have developed a customised badge-based qualification for workers to wear on their overalls to clearly show they have the accreditation,” added Mrs Crossland-Clarke, who said the company has also just secured a further contract for the firm.

“This will see us develop health and safety induction training for 1,500 mining contractors at the Kalembela low density copper and nickel mine, which expects to run for between one and two months later this year.”

“The development of the safety advisors at First Quantum means our trainer can visit armed with his CIEH materials and IIRSM application forms. The learners feel they get more than just a certificate; they have knowledge and professional recognition of their skills internationally.”

Another recent visit, this time to the Far East, has also borne fruit

SHE Knows trainer Mr Bill visited Singapore and Vietnam at the end of May in conjunction with UK Trade and Industry.

As a result, it is in advanced discussions with the Institute of Adult Learning in Singapore has signed up to a five-day IOSH managing safely course to help local business managers understand risk assessments and the monitoring of health and safety requirements.
