Does OHSAS 18001 work?
Unilever Research and Development was the first Unilever R&D site to achieve accreditation to OHSAS 18001 in 2003.
It has provided us with a framework within which we manage our diverse risks and review performance. Our site has seen a steady decrease in our accident rate since 2003 and we are still seeking to continuously improve by strengthening our safety culture.

Opportunistic Pathogens – Pseudomonas
Pseudomonas is an effective biofilm forming bacteria capable of inhabiting most domestic surfaces. It is gaining more attention as an opportunistic bacteria which can be fatal when immunosuppressed individuals are exposed to it. This is proving to be a particular problem due to the bacteria’s successful resistance to many broad-spectrum antibiotics. The problem for us is that water utility companies have no standards governing pseudomonas concentrations in supply water and therefore the question is: Can we really know if the problem is being caused in our systems or is at the source? Can we stop it?

Thinking outside the factory – EHS Compliance in offices, warehouses and other non-manufacturing locations
Many companies understand the issue of EHS compliance with regard to manufacturing sites, but have not fully addressed the primary Health and Safety issues of their non-manufacturing (offices and warehouses) sites. Although considered a lower-risk concern, health and safety incidents still occur in non-manufacturing environments and many countries are increasing their regulatory attention and enforcement practices in this area. This session addresses the EHS risks and challenges in offices and other non-manufacturing locations and demonstrates how to assure compliance in such settings around the world.

Why Behavioural Safety makes no sense
April 2010 - Deepwater Horizon Macondo well – 11 people die, major environmental disaster. Why did BP, Transocean and Halliburton get it so wrong? All are major international players working in a high risk business with a long history of applying behavioural safety! We all know that the human contribution is critical, but behavioural safety hasn’t delivered to expectations. A step change in performance needs a step change in approach. We need a re-think!

The time to learn to dance is not the night before the party!
It is our experience that the only certainty in a workplace fatality investigation is that it will almost certainly have been both predictable and preventable. Alan will present a case study of the investigation into a fatal accident where a basic audit of the company’s safety systems would have highlighted a number of failures which would have thrown up preventative actions which could have saved a life as opposed to post incident corrective actions. He will demonstrate pro active use of the TapRooT® RCA System.
Alan Smith, Director, Matrix Risk Control
